How Much Should You Save vs. Give? A Christian Financial Framework

The Quick Answer:

  • Give ~10%

  • Save/invest ~15–25%

  • Live on the rest

This isn’t a rigid rule, but a way to live with intention. The goal isn’t just to build wealth or give more. It’s to be faithful with what you’ve been entrusted with.

Why Is This Harder Than It Should Be?

Almost every Christian family I talk to feels this tension:

They want to be generous. They also want to be wise. And at some point, these two start to feel like they’re competing.

You start asking:

  • “Are we giving too much?”

  • “Are we falling behind?”

  • “Should we pull back for a season?”

What usually happens is you drift one direction:

  • You hold back out of fear

  • Or you give without a plan and feel it later

Neither leads to what you desire.

The Solution: Give, Save, Live

Not a rule: just a starting point for those who are searching for one.

Give first.
For many people, 10% is a helpful starting point. Not because it’s required, but because it builds consistency and opens our hands to release control (key!). This keeps your priorities in the right place.

Then save and invest.

If you’re not intentional here, it usually doesn’t “just happen.” A healthy target (from my financial planning perspective) for most families is 15-25% over time.

Then live on the rest.
This is where lifestyle creep can quietly take over. Not because you’re reckless, but because it’s easy. Without boundaries, your income grows… and everything else along with it.

What If You’re Not There Yet?

Most people aren’t. That’s normal. If you’re in debt, focus on getting it cleaned up, but don’t forget about generosity (generosity can be much more than money!).

If you don’t have savings yet, start building a cushion. It doesn’t have to be perfect—just start.

If you feel behind, don’t swing to extremes and cut giving completely. That usually creates a different kind of problem.

You will not fix this problem overnight. Small steps and a consistent plan create a habit.

This Isn’t Really About Percentages

You won’t find a perfect formula in Scripture, but you will find a consistent call to:

  • Be wise

  • Be generous

  • Think long-term

  • Live with contentment

This is less about hitting exact numbers and ratios, and more about building a life that reflects what you believe.

Instead of asking, “How much should I give?”

A better question might be, “What kind of life am I trying to build?”

Because if generosity and wisdom are both part of that, your plan should reflect both.

If You Want Help

This is the kind of conversation we have every day! Helping families figure out how to be generous, plan wisely, and feel confident about where they’re headed. If you’ve been trying to sort that out, you’re not the only one!
